Zao Jiao TCM Herb Classifications and Usages

The TCM herb "zao jiao" which in english is "chinese honeylocust fruit, gleditsia", is categorized within the "herbs that transform phlegm cold" functional grouping. It is thought to enter the large intestine and lung channels and exhibits acrid and warm (wen) taste/temperature properties.

Dosages and preparations will vary according to each individual and the overall approach of a formula, but generally this herb has the following dosage and/or preparation guidelines:

  • Dosage: 0.6-1.5g (pill and powder form only)

Of many possible clinical applications, it may be considered to influence the following issues/symptoms:

  • Dispels phlegm - phlegm nodules, coughing with copious but difficult to expectorate sputum, strongly dispels phlegm.
  • Opens orifices and revives the spirit - sudden loss of consciousness with facial paralysis or seizures due to excessive phlegm.
  • Dissipates clumps and reduces swellings.

Zao Jiao has some precautions to be considered (see our precautions list).

  • Avoid during Pregnancy.
