LU 5 Acupuncture Point Applications and Theory

The acupuncture point "LU 5" , 尺澤, is represented by "Chi Ze" in pinyin and "Cubit Marsh" in english and may be found:

At the cubital crease on the radial side of the biceps brachii tendon.

Of many possible clinical applications, it may be considered to influence the following issues/symptoms:

  • He Sea Point - useful for counterflow Qi/diarrhea, hot skin conditions, phlegm-heat excess.
  • Acute/Chronic or Exterior/Interior Conditions.
  • Upper body edema, enuresis.
  • Local point for the elbow - tendonitis, tennis elbow.
  • Classically noted for the 5 types of Lumbar Pain - possibly the upper body equivalent of UB 40.
  • Main treatment point of Kidney Sho pattern (with KD 7 and LU 8) - in Japanese style Five Phase treatment protocol.

LU 5 has some precautions to be considered (see our precautions list).

Avoid Moxa (MX)

Lu 5 has the following theoretical associations which serve as important guideposts in designing an effective treatment protocol:

Explore lu 5 functional grouping theory - Five Shu, or read all point categories and related theory.

A single acupuncture point is not commonly thought of as an empirical way to influence a TCM diagnostic pattern. LU5, however, is a strong candidate to be incorporated into an acupuncture protocol for patients who exhibit: Lung Dampness - Phlegm Heat

LU 5 may potentially be used, in coordination with a well designed acupuncture treatment protocol, to influence the following conditions: Back Pain, Diarrhea, Edema, Skin Problems (Rash), Tendinitis and/or Tennis Elbow

While not necessarily valid clinically, HT 3 (Pain, numbness, tremors, etc. of the lower arms a…), LI 11 (Reduction of high fevers, patients with the 4 big…), PC 3 (Chronic angina - palpitations, anxiety, panic att…) and SI 8 (Elbow problems, swelling, trembling, pain, numbne…) are nearby.
