UB 14 Acupuncture Point Applications and Theory

The acupuncture point "UB 14" , 厥陰俞, is represented by "Jue Yin Shu" in pinyin and "Jue Yin Shu (Pericardium Shu)" in english and may be found:

1.5 cun lateral to the GV line, level with T4.

Of many possible clinical applications, it may be considered to influence the following issues/symptoms:

  • For all heart conditions: palpitations, anxiety, stress, etc. Combine with PC 6 to open the chest (as in the case of plum pit qi).  This chest pain can be psycho-emotional (i.e. liver/heart system related in Chinese Medicine terms), or it may be from simple congestion (cough, rebellious qi, shortness of breath, etc.).
  • Harmonizes the liver - as the "Jueyin Shu" you may also treat LV related conditions such as stagnation of LV Qi - depression, anxiety, panic attacks, etc.

Ub 14 has the following theoretical associations which serve as important guideposts in designing an effective treatment protocol:

A single acupuncture point is not commonly thought of as an empirical way to influence a TCM diagnostic pattern. UB14, however, is a strong candidate to be incorporated into an acupuncture protocol for patients who exhibit: Heart Qi Deficiency, Heart Yin Deficiency, Liver Qi Stagnation and/or Stomach Rebellious Qi

UB 14 may potentially be used, in coordination with a well designed acupuncture treatment protocol, to influence the following conditions: Anxiety, Chest Pain, Cough, Palpitations, Panic Attack and/or Plum Pit Qi

While not necessarily valid clinically, EX Huatuojiaji at T4 (T4 innervates the breast and influences the sweat…), SI 9 (Local point for shoulder and arm pain and/or move…), SI 11 (Breast problems, mastitis, insufficient lactation…) and UB 43 ( Main point for all disorders of the Lung and Up…) are nearby.
