Ba Ji Tian TCM Herb Classifications and Usages

The TCM herb "ba ji tian" which in english is "morinda root", is categorized within the "herbs that tonify yang" functional grouping. It is thought to enter the kidney and liver channels and exhibits acrid, sweet (gan) and warm (wen) taste/temperature properties.

Dosages and preparations will vary according to each individual and the overall approach of a formula, but generally this herb has the following dosage and/or preparation guidelines:

  • Dosage: 6-15g

Of many possible clinical applications, it may be considered to influence the following issues/symptoms:

  • Tonify kidneys, strengthen yang - impotence, male or female infertility, premature ejaculation, frequent urination, urinary incontinence, irregular menses, low back pain and weakness, cold and painful abdomen.
  • Strengthen sinews and bones - back pain, muscular atrophy.
  • Expel wind/damp cold - back and leg qi pain, bi syndromes.

While it may not always be included depending on the manufacturer or herbalist making the formula, ba ji tian is generally included in the following 2 formulas:
