Du Zhong TCM Herb Classifications and Usages

The TCM herb "du zhong" which in english is Du Zhong herb"eucommia bark", is categorized within the "herbs that tonify yang" functional grouping. It is thought to enter the kidney and liver channels and exhibits acrid, sweet (gan) and warm (wen) taste/temperature properties.

Dosages and preparations will vary according to each individual and the overall approach of a formula, but generally this herb has the following dosage and/or preparation guidelines:

  • Dosage: 6-15g

Of many possible clinical applications, it may be considered to influence the following issues/symptoms:

  • Tonify liver and kidneys, strengthen sinews and bones - weak, painful knees and lower back, fatigue, frequent urination.
  • Promotes smooth flow of qi and blood circulation.
  • Calms the fetus - for cold deficient kidney patterns with bleeding during pregnancy, prevents miscarriages from deficiency.
  • Recently used for dizziness from liver yang rising (hypertension).

Du Zhong may potentially be used, in coordination with a well tailored formula (in most cases), to influence the following conditions: back pain, fatigue, hypertension (high blood pressure), knee pain and/or urinary disorders (lin disease)

While it may not always be included depending on the manufacturer or herbalist making the formula, du zhong is generally included in the following 8 formulas:
