Fo Shou TCM Herb Classifications and Usages

The TCM herb "fo shou" which in english is "finger citron fruit", is categorized within the "herbs that regulate the qi" functional grouping. It is thought to enter the liver, lung, spleen and stomach channels and exhibits acrid, bitter (ku) and warm (wen) taste/temperature properties.

Dosages and preparations will vary according to each individual and the overall approach of a formula, but generally this herb has the following dosage and/or preparation guidelines:

  • Dosage: 6-9g

Of many possible clinical applications, it may be considered to influence the following issues/symptoms:

  • Regulates and soothes liver Qi - rib pain and distention, belching.
  • Harmonizes the stomach and strengthens the spleen - epigastric pain and distention, lack of appetite, belching, vomiting.
  • Dries dampness and transforms phlegm - chronic cough with phlegm and chest pain (weak, not well suited for acute conditions).
