Gao Liang Jiang TCM Herb Classifications and Usages

The TCM herb "gao liang jiang" which in english is "galangal rhizome", is categorized within the "herbs that warm the interior and expel cold" functional grouping. It is thought to enter the spleen and stomach channels and exhibits acrid and hot (re) taste/temperature properties.

Dosages and preparations will vary according to each individual and the overall approach of a formula, but generally this herb has the following dosage and/or preparation guidelines:

  • Dosage: 1.5-9g

Of many possible clinical applications, it may be considered to influence the following issues/symptoms:

  • Warms the middle warmer, alleviates pain - epigastric/abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, hiccup due to cold in the middle warmer.

While it may not always be included depending on the manufacturer or herbalist making the formula, gao liang jiang is generally included in the following 1 formula:

Abnormal vaginal discharge - yellow or green colour, cottage-cheese like texture and foul smelling. Painful urination, burning, increased urgency/frequency.  Yeast infection.
