He Huan Pi TCM Herb Classifications and Usages

The TCM herb "he huan pi" which in english is He Huan Pi herb"mimosa tree bark", is categorized within the "herbs that nourish the heart and calm the spirit" functional grouping. It is thought to enter the heart and liver channels and exhibits neutral (ping) and sweet (gan) taste/temperature properties.

Dosages and preparations will vary according to each individual and the overall approach of a formula, but generally this herb has the following dosage and/or preparation guidelines:

  • Dosage: 9-15g

Of many possible clinical applications, it may be considered to influence the following issues/symptoms:

  • Calms the spirit, relieves constrained emotions - vexation, depression, insomnia, irritability, poor memory.
  • Invigorates the blood, alleviates pain - pain and swelling due to trauma, abscesses.
  • The flower, He Huan Hua (ye he hua, ye he mi) has similar functions for calming the shen from liver constraint - insomnia, chest oppression, irritability.

He Huan Pi has some precautions to be considered (see our precautions list).

  • Use with caution during pregnancy (stimulates uterine contractions).

A single herb is not often thought of as an empirical way to influence a TCM diagnostic pattern. He Huan Pi, however, is a strong candidate to be considered when needing to influence liver qi stagnation.

He Huan Pi may potentially be used, in coordination with a well tailored formula (in most cases), to influence the following conditions: depression, insomnia, irritability, memory problems and/or trauma

While it may not always be included depending on the manufacturer or herbalist making the formula, he huan pi is generally included in the following 2 formulas:
