Qing Fen TCM Herb Classifications and Usages

The TCM herb "qing fen" which in english is "calomel", is categorized within the "herbs for external applications" functional grouping. It is thought to enter the kidney, liver and urinary bladder channels and exhibits acrid and cold (han) taste/temperature properties.

Dosages and preparations will vary according to each individual and the overall approach of a formula, but generally this herb has the following dosage and/or preparation guidelines:

  • Dosage: 0.1-0.2g for internal
  • Topically as a powder.

Of many possible clinical applications, it may be considered to influence the following issues/symptoms:

  • Relieves toxicity, kills parasites - external wash for scabies and syphilitic chancres.
  • Expels water and unblocks the bowels and bladder.
