Wu Zhu Yu TCM Herb Classifications and Usages

The TCM herb "wu zhu yu" which in english is Wu Zhu Yu herb"evodia fruit", is categorized within the "herbs that warm the interior and expel cold" functional grouping. It is thought to enter the kidney, liver, spleen and stomach channels and exhibits acrid, bitter (ku) and hot (re) taste/temperature properties.

Dosages and preparations will vary according to each individual and the overall approach of a formula, but generally this herb has the following dosage and/or preparation guidelines:

  • Dosage: 3-9g

Of many possible clinical applications, it may be considered to influence the following issues/symptoms:

  • Warms the middle, disperses cold, relieves constraint in the liver channel and alleviates pain - headaches, nausea, cold hernia in the liver channel region.
  • Redirects stomach Qi downwards - due to liver and/or stomach disharmony.
  • Warms the spleen and expels damp cold, stops diarrhea.
  • Leads fire downwards - mouth/tongue canker sores (externally applied to canker sores).

Wu Zhu Yu may potentially be used, in coordination with a well tailored formula (in most cases), to influence the following conditions: diarrhea, headache, hernia, mouth sores (ulcers) and/or nausea

While it may not always be included depending on the manufacturer or herbalist making the formula, wu zhu yu is generally included in the following 2 formulas:

Liver qi stagnation with blood deficiency heat - signs of heat, red eyes, possibly anxiety and/or irritability, etc. along with digestive issues such as gastritis, cirrhosis, cholecystitis, hernia.…

ViewWen Jing Wan (Warm the Menses Formula)

Irregular menstruation, amenorrhea, excessive uterine bleeding or spotting between cycles.  Infertility, history of miscarriage.
