Zhen Zhu TCM Herb Classifications and Usages

The TCM herb "zhen zhu" which in english is "pearl", is categorized within the "herbs that anchor, settle and calm the spirit" functional grouping. It is thought to enter the heart and liver channels and exhibits cold (han), salty (xian) and sweet (gan) taste/temperature properties.

Dosages and preparations will vary according to each individual and the overall approach of a formula, but generally this herb has the following dosage and/or preparation guidelines:

  • Dosage: 0.3-0.9g pill/powder

Of many possible clinical applications, it may be considered to influence the following issues/symptoms:

  • Sedates the heart - tremor, palpitations, seizures, childhood convulsions.
  • Clears the liver - blurred vision.
  • Promotes healing, generates flesh - ulcers of the gums or throat.

While it may not always be included depending on the manufacturer or herbalist making the formula, zhen zhu is generally included in the following 6 formulas:

ViewFu Fang Zhen Zhu An Chuang Wan (Margarite Acne Pills)

Cystic acne, pimples. Skin irritation due to damp heat - eczema, boils, carbuncles, etc. With appropriate diagnosis can be used for acute dermatitis, poison ivy/oak.

ViewJiang Ya Wan (Repress The Blood Pressure Pills)

Hypertension particularly with ascendent yang and heat signs - red face, red tongue, headaches, irritability, anxiety, insomnia, etc.
